Beaumont’s favorite slugger, Jay Bruce, and his wife, Hannah, head up a terrific non-profit to help the community and the Arc of Greater Beaumont. This event has gone on for years, and each year gets bigger and better. What started off as a golf tournament has grown into a grand golf benefit and gala in a new season for the Bruce family.
Recently, Jay retired from Major League Baseball. His long career and stardom never took him away from the people he loved and the place he calls home. He and Hannah wanted to mark a new era in the Golf Benefit with a new, updated logo, and I’m glad I got the call.
The desire for a minimalist approach and classy, sophisticated icon proved to be a fun one. The sleek lines and quiet, strong tone reflected a more mature look for the benefit built for a new season.
I worked up a few concepts, but we quickly reached this look of two drivers crossed with a baseball large and centered overhead. The JGB for Jay Bruce Golf carry about the same weight as the strokes of circles around it, encasing the logo elements into a polished, clean badge.
The muted gold and navy give a regal quality, a little preppy and mature, but not too stuffy either. It’s a mature, classy logo that is equally old-school as it is new.
We worked up a mail piece and save-the-date as well to match the website design and graphics (updated). Seeing this logo on promotional, printed, and digital material is super rewarding, and I’m excited to be involved once again with the Bruce team. Retirement
He came in hot with the Reds, quickly making a name for himself in the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. He famously hit a soul-crushing homer against our beloved Astros for the playoffs under then-coach, Dusty Baker. His legend and folklore was set from there in Ohio, and he went on to become an All-Star.
His powerful, lefty bat had New York calling before long, though, and he shined with the Mets in the Big Apple. He also had playoff highlight reels in Cleveland from a late trade. Bruce continued hitting moon shots in his All-Star career, making more fans in Philly, Mets, and finally the Yankees.
He announced his retirement in pinstripes, but continues to give back to the community. I illustrated this design as a thank you to Jay and to commemorate a great MLB career and making us all proud in this Cajun corner of Texas.
UPDATE 01-2023: He most recently set up a new shop for his over favorite pastime—hunting and fishing. Sure-Shot game calls is a popular brand of duck call, and now it’s his day-to-day. Look for more with the Bruce family and the NEW golf benefit this year!
